It take two years for this insect to mature, so it is available to trout on a year round basis. It is at its largest size right before runoff, when the mature larval build their cocoons and begin their transformation into adults.
The adults emerge in July, making for some great dry fly fishing during this time of year.

This big caddis fly is a net spinner that is found all over North America, coast to coast. It lives in pristine waters over 1,500 ft in elevation. Here in Colorado, that means just about everywhere there are trout. This caddis fly builds a net that it tends to gathering food out of the current. It also builds a hut next to its net. Not a case, like cased caddis, but a little home! It must get bored with the scenery because it, and other members of this family engage in one of the highest rates of behavioral drift in streams. This makes it widely available to trout
