Hot Wire Prince
A variation is show above, substituting red wire for the traditional green
The soft hackle in the front gives an impression of life and imparts great movement to the fly. The addition of peacock just adds to this. My favorite version of this fly has the contrasting r ed and hot yellow wire at the back. At first this appears to be and odd combination, but the secret is how the fly looks in the water.
Traditional Hot wire tied with hot yellow and green wire. Gets a lot of time on the water, when I'm purely green drake fishing. The contrasting wire has the same illusion of movement.
As an object moves down the water column towards the bottom, light begins to get filtered out. The first color to disappear is red. So as this fly sinks, the red wire starts to appear more and more black. This creates a contrast between the hot yellow wire and a not quite red/not quite black color. The result is that this fools the fish into the illusion of movement, and imitates the large variety of stoneflies that are found in the streams. If I am specifically targeting for mayflies, I will use the traditional Hot Wire Prince tied with hot yellow and green wire. Trout are fooled into taking this fly as a Green Drake or other mayfly that has gills along the back. All this and more makes this one deadly pattern Sizes I fish: Red/yellow: size 10-14 Green/yellow: size 12-14
