Pheasant Tail

With a slim profile, it gives the impression of a variety of mayfly nymphs. Originally developed for baetis (blue winged olive) hatches, it imitates a large variety of mayfly nymphs found in our local streams and lakes year round, from blue winged olives, pale morning duns, callibaetis and more. Make sure to carry them in a few different sizes so that you can imitate the dominant mayfly activity at the time.
Also, with the availability of dyed pheasant tail, added flashback, and a bead head or standard version, the possibilities for this fly and versatility are nearly endless so have fun. If you don’t want to make it complicated, you really can’t go wrong with the original and it should be a core pattern in your box.
Red? You bet. You might be surprised.
