These types of caddis don’t build a case to live in and come in all shapes and sizes. I have personally found some that are larger than an inch! Abundant in the streams of the area and available year round, uncased caddis are not to be missed!

One of the more interesting types of uncased caddies are those that spin nets. These nets are strung between debris of rocks in the rivers and are used to filter out organic matter that gets caught in the current. They tend to these nets and can sometimes loose their grip and become victim to hungry trout.

Recommended Flies  Charteuse Copper John or ChartreuseWire Nymph

Sizes: 16 - 10

Like all caddis, they engage in behavioral drift, most often at dawn and dusk, where they willingly let go of their hold and drift down stream in search of better habitat so trout are used to seeing them regularly.

With the abundance, size and all year round availability, trout are always on the lookout for these insects making a fly with a caddis green color a great bet.

Lots of gills on the underside!

Picking Confidence Patterns:

These bugs have lots of gills down their abdomen. Pick patterns that are made with lots of fur that will ruff up to represent this movement or get creative with ostrich if you are a tier. Consider a pattern that has a hook with a curve to it. When in the drift, the larva curls up.
